“With sensitivity and empathy, McCarthy tells the story of a boy given up for adoption in the 1950s, when an unwed mother was a pariah. Maggie Porter’s decision to give up her baby has ramifications across generations and continents, and McCarthy explores all facets of this 20th century drama.”
Betty Cotter, author Roberta’s Woods and The Winters
The Faces of War
“McCarthy has fashioned a story etched from the power of the human spirit and the darkness of the human soul and is the best war novel in recent history. Not to be missed.

The Faces of War is a WWII historical fiction page- turner which explores the horrors of war and brings a rare perspective as seen through the eyes of an American GI and a young German civilian. It takes place from 1941-1946 when war swept through Europe killing civilians and destroying cities and towns and came to end leaving grief and devastation it its wake. It’s the story of courage, betrayal, guilt, drug addiction, and forgiveness.
In 2014, My husband, Gerry and I spent three days in Luxembourg with US Veterans and friends touring German and American cemeteries, and other historical sites including the Siegfried Line, and Bastogne (Belgium), site of the Battle of the Bulge. Our five days in Normandy walking the beaches, visiting museums and towns where reminders of the War still existed, was my inspiration to write The Faces of War.Further research led me to understand why and how camps for German POWs existed in America,, how they were managed, and the roles prisoners filled in the US while the draft drained the workforce of able bodied men. The main characters of my book, John Conway, an American soldier and Karl Baum, a young German are fictional as is their story.
